Market Drayton

This classic canal route takes you from Swanley Marina to the market town of Market Drayton, famous for its gingerbread and all its history, travelling south on the Shropshire Union Canal and tackling the famous Audlem Flight of Locks along the way.

Covering approximately 15 miles, the journey includes the 15 locks of the Audlem Flight and typically takes 8–9 hours of cruising. It’s best enjoyed as a full day’s cruise, or split into two relaxed days with an overnight stop at Audlem.

After leaving Swanley Marina, the canal winds through open countryside before reaching Audlem Bottom Lock. The Audlem Flight is one of the highlights of the Shroppie, with a vibrant canalside atmosphere, traditional pubs, and picturesque views as you climb steadily uphill. Above the flight, the canal returns to level cruising for the final stretch into Market Drayton.

Market Drayton offers convenient visitor moorings within walking distance of shops, cafés, pubs, and local amenities — an ideal destination for an overnight stay or a base for further cruising.
